Ukhrul DC calls for tree plantation to safeguard environment

EKHON | UKHRUL: To mark the World Environment Day observance, tree plantation drive was organized at the UDCRMS Resource Centre, Hungpung in collaboration with the Divisional Forest Office Ukhrul, the Arch Diocese of Imphal and PARDA.

Speaking at the occasion as chief guest, Ukhrul DC Zuringla Kengoo emphasized the significance of the event, which saw the participation of both elders and students. Kengoo highlighted the long-standing use of timber for construction but lamented the unsustainable consumption of natural resources.

While stating the destructive consequences of human activities on nature, such as floods and landslides, the instance of which was seen recently. She reflected that while nature has provided humans with an abundance of resources, humans have not reciprocated by giving back.

‘We all have a crucial role to play in safeguarding our environment,’ Kengoo asserted. ‘It’s not nature or trees that depend on us, but we depend on them.’

She strongly appealed those present to refrain from littering and to dispose of waste responsibly.

In his speech as guest of honour, Ukhrul DFO Rajesh Darade stressed the constitutional mandate where the protection of nature is a fundamental duty of each citizen. He highlighted the importance of ‘planting for upcoming generations,’ ensuring that future generations inherit a healthy and thriving environment.

While addressing the welcome speech, Lily Rose Jajo, DPO UDCRMS expressed the need for environmental awareness and action and the significance of tree planting. She emphasized the necessity for collaboration in driving positive change. “Working together is the right approach to make a difference,” she remarked.

She concluded by calling upon all citizens to act responsibly and contribute to environmental protection. “Let us all be responsible stewards of our planet,” she urged.

The event also saw prize distribution ceremony for the Earth Day painting competition organized by the Arch Diocese of Imphal. Molung Dominic, the program coordinator, announced the winners from six schools across Ukhrul district.

As part of the observance, all the participants planted different species of tree saplings including cherry, gul mohar, and other ornamental trees at the UDCRMS campus. DFO Darade contributed saplings and tree guards, while PARDA contributed Kachai lemon saplings to the participants.
