Ukhrul, Manipur | EKHON: Residents of Hungpung, Shangshak Phunghon, Shangshak Khullen, and Hatha villages have warned of a 72-hour NH-202 highway blockade from February 4-6 if authorities fail to address their grievances. They submitted a representation to the Deputy Commissioner on 28th January, urging immediate action on the neglected NH-202 highway expansion project and unpaid land compensation and seek state government concurrence and demand release of unpaid land compensation along with project execution timelines.
The villagers acknowledge the initiation of NH-202 expansion activities since 2018 but express deep concern over the neglect of the Finch Corner to Choithar Junction stretch despite being a vital corridor for emergency medical care, commerce, education and overall wellbeing for the entire population of Ukhrul district.
They highlighted key issues;
– Land acquisition completed, but compensation not paid to villagers
– Package-3 and Package-4 works stalled, causing public suffering
– Poor road condition, with severe potholes and landslides
– Lack of urgency in project execution and compensation release
The concerned villagers specifically highlighted the package-wise status. The Yaingangpokpi to Finch Corner package is ongoing, while the Finch Corner to Hungpung package tender has been cancelled with pending funds. The Hungpung to Choithar package remains ‘Not Tendered’, with only minor repairs done so far.
The villagers demand immediate action, including compensation release and project execution. They’ll withdraw the blockade if authorities assure progress within a week
