TNL Seeks Immediate Govt Action for Safe Release of Civilians on Ukhrul–Imphal Route

Date:

Ukhrul, Manipur | EKHON: The Tangkhul Naga Long (TNL) has written to the Government of Manipur demanding immediate intervention for the safe and unconditional release of civilians reportedly held captive at Shangkai along the Ukhrul–Imphal road.

In a statement issued on Wednesday, the organization expressed “strong concern and outrage” over reports that innocent civilians travelling along the road were intercepted and detained by alleged Kuki groups at Shangkai. According to TNL, the incident represents a serious violation of citizens’ fundamental rights and freedom of movement.

The Tangkhul Naga apex body said the alleged detention of travellers on a vital route connecting Ukhrul and Imphal reflects a disturbing breakdown of law and order along a key public highway. It further noted that the incident has created fear and anger among the public, while families of the detained individuals remain anxious and uncertain about the safety of their loved ones.

“TNL strongly urges the government to intervene immediately and ensure the safe and unconditional release of the civilians without delay,” the statement said, adding that the state cannot remain a silent spectator when citizens are unlawfully detained on a public road.

The organization also called on the authorities to take firm and decisive measures to guarantee the safety of all commuters using the Ukhrul–Imphal route. It demanded that those responsible for the alleged act be identified and held accountable under the law.

TNL warned that failure to respond decisively to such incidents could further deepen the prevailing insecurity in the region and erode public confidence in the government’s ability to maintain law and order.

The appeal comes amid continuing tensions in parts of Manipur, where several organizations have been urging the government to ensure safe movement for civilians on inter-district roads.

While the exact number of Tangkhul Naga Civilians being detained is not known, it is speculated to be over 20. It is also reported that all of this happened right in front of the Central Security Forces.

Sources also said that three vehicles belonging to Tangkhul Naga civilians are detained by the Kukis at Shangkai, including the Ukhrul-Imphal bound winger.
