Ukhrul: As part of Green Ukhrul movement and to beautify the town, Khamatek, Ukhrul organised a plantation drive on fruit bearing trees on the roadside.
Zuringla Kengoo, Deputy Commissioner of Ukhrul launched the plantation programme by planting an apple plant in a simple function held at Gandhi chowk Phungreitang Ukhrul Town.
Speaking at the occasion, Zuringla acknowledges the effort of Khamatek society to keep Ukhrul town clean through planting fruit bearing trees. Ukhrul climate, she said is favourable for varieties of fruit species, and are very rich in horticultural products with valuable health benefits. She felt that planting fruit bearing trees will naturally create a mindset of better outlook toward restoring the green environment of the town.

Meanwhile, secretary of Khamatek society, Ukhrul M. Zimik said that more than 200 saplings including low chilling apples, plum, avacado and wild peach will be planted across the town areas during the plantation drive.
The main objective of planting fruit bearing trees is to create an essence of common responsibility through nurturing trees that bear fruit for all, he said.
Besides providing shade, the naturally gifted fruits can be plucked any time and equally shared by all commuters including non local visitors of Ukhrul. This will naturally strengthen human attachment with nature and will definitely enhance in our conserving of rich biodiversity, stated Zimik.
Low chilling apple saplings were provided by DC, Ukhrul Zuringla Kengoo while the plum plant was contributed by Dr. Ngahorshai as a part of their support in the movement for beautification of Ukhrul town.
