Ukhrul | July 19, 2025: In a triumphant stride for biodiversity, the secluded woodlands of Shirui village in Ukhrul district have become home to a rare flying squirrel, Biswamoyopterus Genus Flying Squirrel, distinguished by its striking white tufted ears and believed to be of immense scientific interest. This extraordinary find was made possible by a grassroots wildlife initiative led by ENFOGAL (Environmental Force at Grass Root Level), in collaboration with conservationists Horzak Zimik and Chuimaran Shangh.
The impressive team was speaheaded by Patrick Shangh, Project Director of ENFOGAL, alongside Chingrisoror Rumthao, Field Officer at WTI, Wildlife photographers Horzak Zimik and Chuimaran Shangh, whose lenses captured the elusive creature. Local guide Pamreithing Luireiwo, whose deep traditional ecological knowledge helped locate and identify the species.

According to Patrick Shangh, the villagers of Shirui deserve special mention for their visionary decision to ban hunting—an act that fostered a safe haven for endangered wildlife. Their commitment to conservation was instrumental in creating the conditions for this rare species to thrive.
The rare discovery left the team overwhelmed. “It felt surreal,” shared photographer Zimik. “Like nature rewarding us for our respect.” Shangh added, “Being able to capture this moment is not just a personal achievement, it’s a call for all of us to protect what’s still left.”
With the blessing of the Shirui village authority, ENFOGAL and its collaborators plans to embark on an in-depth study of the squirrel’s habitat, diet, and behaviors. Insights from this research will be shared with scientific communities for further analysis and classification, the team said.
ENFOGAL continues to blaze trails in regional environmental work, empowering youth, raising awareness, and nurturing community-driven conservation. It remains the only NGO in Ukhrul district fully dedicated to preserving local wildlife.
