Tangkhul must take lead to reconcile Meitei & Kuki, urges Chairperson of MHRC

EKHON| UKHRUL: Justice UB Saha, the Chairperson of Manipur Human Rights Commission while his maiden visit on Ukhrul urged the Tangkhul community to take lead to end the prolong communal conflict of state in order restore normalcy and way forward toward development in the state.

The MHRC chairperson categorially stated that Tangkhul community has a traditional bond with Meitei & Kuki communities and can access to both conflicting parties into negotiating table to bridge the gap of misunderstanding and resolve the issue through peaceful dialogue.

The visiting MHRC chairman held an interactive session with the DLOs and Tangkhul CSOs leader at the Conference Hall of Deputy Commissioner, Ukhrul located at Hamleikhong, Hungpung Ukhrul headquarter. During the interaction, Saha mentioned that he has come to Ukhrul to hear the voice of the people whether the human rights are ensured, and basic amenities scheme of state are benefitting the community.
He said that the Naga community stayed neutral to the present violent conflict of the state and can play important roles in resolving the issues.

The Nagas in general and Tangkhul must take the pro-active part in reconciling the two conflict parties in the need of the hours. He made a clarion call to the Tangkhul community, you have traditional bond and access to both communities, further urged the Tangkhuls leaders to discharge your responsible duty by approaching the elites’ class of Meitei, Kuki including Nagas and work out for ending the conflict.

Unless peace is there, the state cannot progress or develop and at the same time the districts will have the same problems. He said, Manipur can be a tourist hotspot of country, and can generate substantial income from tourism, conflict should not prolong for so long. There must be resolution in order to progress together.
Meanwhile the Tangkhul Shanao Long (TSL) President Thingreiphy Lungharwo informed the chairperson about the law & Order situation of the district.

She said there were issues of mental wellbeing being traumatized by tagging the hill district as disturbed area by imposing the Armed Power Special Forces Act (APSFA) even though the district like Ukhrul is very peaceful. She expressed dismay that, the Assam Rifles setting up many check posts in the border villages, further informed that landmines were planted in the interior border areas endangering many poor villagers of the region.

Scraping of FMR within the Tangkhul border areas will invite different response as many Tangkhul villages were inside the Myanmar territory stated Lungharwo.

While the other related issues such as Right to Education, Health Care, water problem and basic rights of the people were also highlighted to the visiting chairperson. Taking the cognition of the pertinent issues and problems of the district, the MHRC chairman replied to recommend the matters to the state government for delivering public demand The visiting MHRC chairman and his entourage were given warm reception by the DC, Ukhrul Kengoo Zuringla.

The meeting was attended by ADM, Ukhrul & Jessami, SDOs and the Tangkhul Naga Long, Tangkhul Shanao Long, Tangkhul Katamnao Saklong, Tangkhul Mayar Ngala Long, Hunphun Shanao Long, All Hunphun Tang Association.
