Ukhrul: Around thousand men and women joined Tangkhul Shanao Long (TSL) at the sit-in protest to condemn the dehumanizing act of parading naked of two Vaiphei women earlier on May 4th. Organized by Tangkhul women apex body under the aegis of Naga Women Union (NWU), the protest was held at Ukhrul Mini Secretariat.
The horrible viral video of the incident that saw two Vaiphei women paraded naked and sexually molested by Meitei mob happened earlier on May 4 was widely shared in social media platform on July 19. Since then it has created furore across the country and four culprits have been arrested so far.
Agnes Shaiza, representive of the Long said, “We have seen many communal riots around the world and they understand the importance of human rights and accordingly maintain them. In Manipur the communal riots is in turmoil and we have seen the incident where women’s modesty has been violated, this is something we all detest and we strongly condemned.”
She also mentioned about the recent murder of a Naga woman which was claimed as a mistaken identity saying it has created more tension in the community.
Ranreiphy Kharay, a protester said that everyone whether male or female should understand that the beastly act is a human rights violation. The world needs to hear that we are standing up against such animalistic behavior, she added.
Protesters put up various placards and slogans were shouted. “Arrest the culprit”, “Peace and harmony now”, “Hold the police accountable”, “Our women our pride”, “Women safety, our priority”, “We condemn the barbaric act, end violence, respect women, respect our mother, sisters and daughters,” among others.
Along with Ukhrul today, the sit-in protest is being held in Chandel. Meanwhile, other Naga inhabited areas in the state like Senapati and Tamenglong are said to organize tomorrow.
