Ukhrul: Incessant monsoon rain, mud and slush in the district is not deterring Tangkhul youths from gearing up for the long awaited 30th Naga Students Federation (NSF) General Conference to be held from 24th to 26th August at Long Ground in Ukhrul headquarter.

While days of heavy rain may have rendered parts of road with mud and slush much to the annoyance of the local host, the spirit of ‘show must go on’ is creating wave among the youths of Ukhrul as preparations for the three-day event is in full swing.

Adding much detail into the preparation for the Conference is the main stage where the programme will be held. Well known local designer cum digital artist Easternlight Zimik, who is taking charge of the designing and conceptualizing the over-all look of the podium has much up his sleeve.

Taking past culture into perspective, and with an objective to “enlighten youngsters of our past,” Easternlight Zimik with the assistance of the Local Organizing Committee has collected authentic artefacts to be displayed in the venue.

Centering on fusion of old and new, the designer told Ekhon.in that the authentic artefacts along with various plants, mostly well-kept bonsai plants and wild flowers in the form of colorful posters will blend well with the present reality.

Most youngsters today may not even know ‘samkhok’ (bed) and it will be a good platform to introduce them, he mused.

Some of the collections like the giant buffalo head crafted from a solid tree was brought to showcase the beauty and uniqueness of nature, he added.

The unique collections included; Long pet (Community sleeping bed), Tanglen (Kitchen Shelf), Samkhok (Bed), Vaichum (Liquor storing basket), Shung (dating back 3 generations), Ava Hampa (Stool for the Matriarch), Shanghon (Penis ring), Phungsher, Kaporham (Smoking pipe), giant buffalo head crafted by Ringkahao Khangrah among others.

Well-preserved artefacts were collected from two individuals namely, Ringkahao Khangrah from Sihai village and Blessing Thumra from Lunghar village and they are set to attract both locals as well as the visiting delegates.

Meanwhile, beautification of town and cleanliness drive are being carried out through the support of Ukhrul DC in the stretch of Ukhrul headquarter town to accord warm welcome to the delegates, the local organizing committee informed.

Even as Ukhrul town is all geared up for hosting NSF General Conference, Local Organising Committee reiterated their appeal to different communities in the State to support the historic event and not to disrupt the Conference and refrained from organizing bandh during the event owing to the prevailing ethnic violence in the State.

Furthermore it asked the concerned authority of both NH 202 (Ukhrul to Tadubi road) and NH 105 (Ukhrul to Imphal road) to maintain the road condition for smooth traversing of the delegates.

Celebrating under the theme “Solidarity Without Border”, the Conference hosted by Tangkhul Katamnao Saklong (TKS) is expecting over 1200 Naga students from all Units and other sub-ordinate bodies from the States of Assam, Arunachal Pradesh, Nagaland, Manipur and eastern Naga areas in Myanmar.
