Watch young girls sing folksong recounting Japanese invasion to Jessami

Date:

EKHON | UKHRUL: Young students from Mewuchukhe Primary School, Jessami, Ukhrul district performed the folksong that recounted the Japanese invasion to Jessami during the 2nd World War. It was performed during the cultural celebration of Shiksha Saptah.

The folksong said to be written by Assam Regiment soldiers hailing from the Angami and Chakhesang tribes narrated the Japanese invasion of Jessami at the height of the 2nd World War.

It tells the story of the Japanese army’s rapid advance into Jessami, causing fear among locals. The brave soldiers comforted the villagers, promising their protection. They went on to share tales of the war’s surprise attacks and the subsequent nuclear attack on Japan on August 6 and 9, 1945. In the midst of war’s uncertainty, they expressed hope that the horrors of war will never be repeated.

The folksong by the native etched the history of the invasion into the collective memory, ensuring its legacy endures. Clad in traditional attire, the young girls sang with confidence and joy, keeping alive the song legacy of their elders.
