Shirui Youth Club Warns Tourists Against Uprooting Lily

Date:

Ukhrul|May 23, 2025: A plea to tourists trekking Shirui Kashong (Peak) to respect the delicate Shirui Lily has been issued by the Shirui Youth Club (SYC). Over three days of the 5th Shirui Lily Festival, numerous tourists were observed damaging the flowers, prompting the SYC to request visitors to refrain from picking or uprooting the rare Shirui Lilies and other plants.

The SYC has warned that firm action will be taken against anyone found destroying or removing flowers and plants. In a statement, SYC President Ningkhanrin Shangh emphasized the importance of responsible tourism, saying, “Let’s be respectful visitors, leaving this beautiful place for others to enjoy. A less greedy approach enhances everyone’s experience!”

What is shocking is that according to reports, the culprits caught were none other than officers who are expected to set an example in safeguarding the flower.

The Shirui Lily Festival has attracted a large number of visitors, with over 7,000 people climbing the Shirui Peak so far. Interestingly, 4,000-5,000 of these trekkers are from outside the district, showcasing the festival’s popularity and diversity of footfalls.

The incident highlights the need for greater awareness and vigilance in protecting the state’s precious natural heritage and promote sustainable tourism practices.
