Imphal, Sept 8 | EKHON: The United Naga Council (UNC) on Tuesday announced an indefinite intensification of its ongoing inter-district economic blockade on major National Highways in Manipur from 1 am on Wednesday.
The decision was taken at an Emergency Presidential Council Meeting held at Ukhrul on September 2, the UNC said in a statement.
The intensified blockade will cover NH-2 as well as NH-202 (Jessami), NH-37 (Jiribam) and NH-102A (Tadubi-Ukhrul), according to the council.
The UNC said goods-laden vehicles would not be allowed to ply on the affected highways. Vehicles transporting essential emergency services, including medical supplies, media, power, telecommunications and water supply, have been exempted.
The council said the blockade was a collective expression of its grievances and a demand for justice and accountability in connection with the deaths of six Nagas on May 13.
The UNC alleged that the six persons were “brutally killed, mutilated and dismembered” and said the agitation would continue indefinitely until justice was delivered.
The council also appealed to the public to extend cooperation during the blockade.
The announcement is likely to put additional pressure on the movement of goods and supplies along key highway corridors connecting different parts of the state.
