16 looted Arms Recovered From Hunphun, Remaining To Be Recovered Soon: Dr. IK Muivah

UKHRUL | EKHON: IGP Dr. IK Muivah said that 80% of the looted arms have been recovered, with intense search efforts ongoing to retrieve the remaining weapons as of October 4, 2024. This update comes after a violent clash between Hunphun and Hungpung villages over a long-standing land dispute on October 2, 2024. The conflict began when a social work event organized by the Thawaijao Hungpung Young Student’s Organization (THYSO) turned violent.

During the clash, an enraged mob from Hunphun stormed the Ukhrul Police Station, seizing 20 weapons, including eight 9mm pistols, six INSAS rifles, three AK-47 rifles, two 9mm carbines, one SLR. These weapons were subsequently used in the violent attack. It has since recovered 16 of the looted firearms with 4 still unaccounted for.

Unfortunately, the incident resulted in 4 deaths, including 1 Manipur Rifles personnel and multiple injuries. Efforts are ongoing to recover the remaining weapons and restore order, stated Dr. IK Muivah.

Following the incidents, senior police officers led by IGP IK Muivah along with DIG Worngam Ningshen and SP Ningshem Vashum were deputed to Ukhrul to assist the district administration in restoring law and order along with BSF and Assam Rifles.

Direct conflict between the conflicting parties has ceased from evening of 2nd October till date by deploying adequate security forces consisting of Civil Police, Manipur Rifles, Assam Rifles & BSF and also by getting cooperation of the leaders of two villages, Hunphun and Hungpung.

Dr. IK Muivah lauded the unprecedented cooperation given by the CSOs and various functionaries in the recovery of the looted arms.
