Date:

UKHRUL | March 18, 2025: In a historical move, Ukhrul District Working Journalists’ Association (UDWJA) organized the first Naga Journalists’ Conclave and revived the now defunct union called ‘Syndication of Naga Journalists’ and rechristened it as “Naga Journalists’ Union Manipur” (NJUM).

NJUM was instituted under the motto “Connecting Voices” with an aim to consolidate the solidarity of Naga journalists in Manipur. ‘Syndication of Naga Journalists’ was formed by veteran Naga journalists including Newmai Witoubou and Ngachonmi Chamroy in 2003.

The three-day Conclave held from March 17-19, 2025 at Magen Hills, Viewland in Ukhrul district headquarters was attended by Naga journalists from five Naga districts of Manipur, namely Chandel, Noney, Tamenglong, Senepati and Ukhrul.

Vareiyo Shatsang, General Secretary of the United Naga Council (UNC) graced the event as the proponent of the Conclave. Witoubou Newmai, Chief Editor of Newmai News Network (NNN) and Sothing Hunphun Awungshi, senior journalist, were the panelists.

During the discussion hours, the concerned Naga Journalists deliberate various issues and challenges pertaining to journalism works and took series of resolutions. The members constituted an “Interim Body” headed by the President, General Secretary, Vice Presidents, Executive Members and Drafting Committee.

Pr. Tennoson has been elected as the Interim President and Vangamla Salle KS as the General Secretary. District association president of Ukhrul, Senapati, Tamenglong, Noney and Chandel will act as Vice Presidents while the Executive Members will be district association secretaries of each district. The Interim Body tenure will continue until the election date, which is tentatively fixed on 14 February 2026. Meanwhile, Witoubou Newmai, Sothing Hunphun Awungshi and Ngathingkhui Jagoi were initiated as the Drafting Committees.
