Jessami to Relive War History: WWII Enthusiasts to Recreate Epic 39-Hour Trek

Date:

UKHRUL | 25 March 2025: For the second consecutive year, WWII enthusiasts especially from Europe will converge on Jessami, a small hamlet in Manipur’s Ukhrul district, to embark on the challenging 39 Hours Walk to Kohima. This endurance trek on 1 April will recreate the historic journey of the British Allied Forces, who bravely escaped the Japanese Forces’ aggressive attack in 1944.

This year, Sampan Travel is inviting a maximum of 12 Naga “trailwalkers” to attempt the 100-kilometer journey, which will take them through the dramatic landscape of the Naga Hills. The trek will be fully supported, with expert guides and historical tours of the Battle of Kohima and Jessami. The trek will culminate at the iconic Kohima War Cemetery.

Charlotte Carty, WWII Enthusiast & Battle of Jessami Expert, whose grandfather, Lt Col “Bruno” Brown, that commanded the Assam Regiment during the battle and was killed in action in 1945 will lead the team, honoring her grandfather’s legacy.

In 1944, the Japanese 31st Division attempted to seize Jessami, but were met with fierce resistance from the newly raised Assam Regiment, led by Lt Col “Bruno” Brown. Despite being heavily outnumbered, the young soldiers fought bravely, delaying the Japanese advance and giving the Allied forces crucial time to bolster their defenses at Kohima.

In recent years, Jessami has experienced a remarkable influx of national and international tourists. This quaint village has become a hotspot for battlefield tour enthusiasts and birdwatchers, drawn to its rich historical legacy and stunning biodiversity.

The village’s unique community-driven conservation efforts have played a significant role in its growing popularity. This innovative approach has not only helped preserve Jessami’s natural beauty but also promoted sustainable tourism practices, making it a model for the region.

Jessami’s historical significance, coupled with its breathtaking landscapes and diverse wildlife, has created a unique blend of attractions. Visitors can explore the village’s wartime past, trek through its lush forests, and spot exotic bird species, making Jessami an unmissable destination for those seeking an immersive experience.
