Indefinite Shutdown of NH -202 Announced After Govt. Fails to Deliver

Date:

Ukhrul, Manipur | EKHON: The National Highway-202 Development Committee, Ukhrul district, has announced an indefinite shutdown of the Imphal-Ukhrul route, effective from midnight on March 8, 2026, due to the government’s failure to address outstanding grievances related to the NH-202 Double Lane Expansion project.

The committee had met with Deputy Commissioner Ashish Das and Manager Salman Khan of the Project Monitoring Unit on February 3, 2026, and reached an agreement to redress grievances within February. However, no tangible action was taken, the committee has been forced to resume its agitation.

“We had given them a month to resolve the issues, but they’ve failed to take any concrete action,” said a committee spokesperson. “We’re left with no choice but to impose an indefinite blockade.”

The proposed blockade is over the stalled project of Package-3 and Package-4, covering Finch Corner to Choithar village, and non-payment of land compensation. The villagers demand release of unpaid land compensation and confirmed project execution timelines.

The shutdown is expected to affect daily life and transportation in the region, with the committee appealing for support from local Civil Society Organisations and the general public.

The NH 202 Development Committee which represents Hungpung, Shangshak Phunghon, Shangshak Khullen, and Hatha villages in Ukhrul, Manipur has earlier planned a 72-hour NH-202 highway blockade, but the blockade was recalled following the assurance from the government.
