We Don’t Trust Indian Security Forces to Protect Us: Tangkhul Women in Litan

Litan, Manipur | EKHON: Tangkhul Naga women in Litan, Manipur, have expressed deep distrust towards security forces, alleging bias in handling the ongoing violence between Tangkhul Nagas and Kuki communities in Litan, Ukhrul district of Manipur. The women claim security forces are protecting Kuki armed militants while they’re forced to leave their homes.

The women folks were protesting against the incident that spark exchange for nearly 3 hours from 7 am onwards. According to the women, suspected Kuki armed militants allegedly crossed the Litan River and attempted to advance towards the Tangkhul community.

Security forces threw tear-gas at unarmed women who were protesting, prompting Ukhrul DC Ashis Das to visit the site and assure them of protection. The women demanded the eviction of Indian security forces, claiming bias handling.

Tangkhul Naga women allege security forces are biased, protecting Kuki armed militants while they’re forced to flee their homes. They questioned Ukhrul DC Ashis Das, asking why armed Kukis are being shielded while Tangkhul Nagas face threats in their ancestral land. The DC assured them of protection and promised to address their concerns. 

Meanwhile, Ukhrul DC Ashis Das has distributed relief aid to both Tangkhul Naga and Kuki communities affected by the ongoing crisis. A high-level meeting is reportedly underway to address the situation and restore peace in the area.

The violence between Tangkhul Naga and Kuki communities has resulted in over 30 houses burnt, and hundreds displaced. Security forces have been deployed, and internet services have been suspended for five days to prevent further escalation.
