Imphal, Sept 22 | EKHON: Manipuri cinema earned national recognition at the 72nd National Film Awards with Sunita winning the Best Manipuri Feature Film award.
Director Ajit Yumnam and producer Yumnam Brojen Singh received the prestigious honour from President Droupadi Murmu at the award ceremony held in Ekta Nagar, Gujarat. Actresses Naramada Sougaijam and Binitia Yumnam also attended the ceremony.
Manipur’s presence extended beyond the winning film. Documentary filmmaker James Khangenbam served as a Central Jury Member in the Non-Feature Film category, while filmmaker Thokchom Jimmy was part of the Eastern Panel for the Feature Film category.
Sunita tells the story of a visually impaired woman’s struggle for education, independence and dignity. Despite social, physical and emotional challenges, she perseveres to build an independent life and raise her two children.
The recognition places another spotlight on Manipuri cinema’s contribution to Indian filmmaking and its ability to bring stories of resilience and human dignity to a national audience.
