UNC said the shutdown has been called as a mark of resentment against the brutal murder and tribute to the innocent victim.
Ukhrul: Ukhrul town wore a deserted look following the 12 hour shut down called by United Naga Council (UNC) across Naga-inhabited areas of Manipur to protest the killing of a Naga woman by a mob at Sawombung, Ukhrul road on July 15.
The victim identified as 57 year-old Lucy Marem is a daughter of Thoukhal Marem of Beaulahram village, Pallet, Chandel district.
UNC said the shutdown has been called as a mark of resentment against the brutal murder and tribute to the innocent victim.
It has given 48 hours to fulfill its demands and in the event of not fulfilling, it cautioned of initiating further course of action.
“Vested interest parties who wish to drag us into this conflict will not be spared and our patience and accommodating acts of the recent past should not be taken as a sign of weakness by all concerned who have provoked us, destroying our properties, torturing and humiliating us during the present conflict at different places and times”, said the UNC.
Taking the incident seriously, the UNC had given three points of demands that “the state government must immediately constitute Judiciary Inquiry Committee andarrest those perpetrators of the crime” and exemplary punishment should be initiated upon the culprits.
That the “Cold Blooded killing of Naga sister Lucy Maring must be brought in the limelight of justice befittingly as per the Naga Customary Law.”
And that “The Meitei Civil Society Organizations will be equally held responsible for this despicable act hence their role and position must be made known to all concerned.”
Meanwhile, all business establishments, government offices, schools etc in Ukhrul district remained shut. Vehicular movements in the district as well as throughout Ukhrul-Imphal road are completely shut.
Ramreichan Keishing, President of Tangkhul Katamnao Saklong (TKS) said Tangkhuls are extending full support to the UNC’s call and reiterated that that the culprit should be held responsible for the killing.
