NVG Warns Against NH-202 Shutdown in Ukhrul

Date:

Ukhrul | EKHON: The Naga Village Guard’s Eastern Command has warned the Kuki CSO Working Committee, Ukhrul, against its planned indefinite shutdown of National Highway-202 starting May 13, 2026. The call followed the Kangpokpi ambush on Wednesday that killed several Thadou Baptist Association (TBA) members.

In the statement, the NVG alleged that the proposed blockade was an “arbitrary” move affecting areas of ancestral Naga land. The group questioned the authority of the Kuki CSO Working Committee to enforce such measures on the highway, which serves as a key lifeline for Ukhrul and Kamjong districts.

The NVG further stated that travel along a stretch of NH-202A, particularly between TM Kasom (Roudei) and Mahadev under Ukhrul-Kamjong jurisdiction, has remained severely affected since the outbreak of violence on February 7, 2026. According to the organisation, the area has witnessed heightened militarisation and recurring incidents of ambushes, killings, extortion, and abductions involving civilians, including women and children.

Expressing concern over the deteriorating security situation, the NVG accused Kuki armed elements of carrying out repeated attacks in the region and warned of possible retaliation if the situation escalates further. The statement also urged the Manipur government and law enforcement agencies to take immediate action to restore normalcy and ensure the safety of civilians using the highway.

Additionally, the organisation called upon authorities to examine the legality of the activities of the Kuki CSO Working Committee and take action in accordance with the law.

The situation in many parts of Manipur continues to remain tense.
