Traditional Ceremony Sees Gam Angkang Shimray crowned New Village Chief of Chingjaroi CV

UKHRUL, 17th January 2025: Gam Angkang Shimray, Secretary General of the Asia Indigenous Peoples Pact (AIPP), has been crowned the new village chief of Chingjaroi CV, Ukhrul district in a historic traditional ceremony on 15th January. The coronation ceremony, ‘Wungpam Kakhui,’ was led by outgoing chief Raizar Angkang Shimray, who passed on the title due to health issues and advanced age.

During the ceremony, Raizar Shimray invoked God’s blessings for the village’s progress and peace under Gam’s leadership. He also handed over traditional Tangkhul symbols of authority, including headgear, a spear, and a holy Bible.

Gam Shimray expressed gratitude to his brother and promised to work with integrity, seeking the villagers’ support to bring holistic governance and safeguard their rights. As a human rights activist, Gam reassured that his new role complements his existing work, aiming to secure democracy for the Naga people.

The ceremony was attended by notable figures, including RS. Jollyson, Tennyson, SA. Ramnganing, Vareiyo, Jubilate Kazingmei, and Seth Shatsang. With over 30 years of experience in advocating for democracy and human rights, Gam Shimray’s leadership is expected to bring a fresh perspective to the village.
