EKHON |UKHRUL: Ukhrul, Deputy Commissioner Kengoo Zuringla launched District Icons and appointed Sorei Keishing, Reisangmi Vashum, Augustine Shimray and Solim Jajo from the district to help spread awareness on voting and influence youngsters to enroll in the electoral system and ensure maximum voting in the upcoming Manipur MP election. Present at the launched were Dinringam Kamei SDO Ukhrul, Rohini Kumar, SDO LM block, P. Duna Duo, ADM, Jessami and SDO incharge Jessami and Chingai and other election functionaries at the Deputy Commissioner’s Chamber in Mini Secretariat, Ukhrul.
Speaking on the occasion, Kengoo Zuringla emphasized on upholding fair and inclusive election and also an election where the voters are informed, educated of their rights and duties. Acknowledging the personalities who were chosen for their influence in the society, the DC said “that people with personalities in the society and in the community play a vital role in influencing our young minds and we want to make our young voters understand the value of the power, that is their right to vote when they attain 18 years of age.”
We want to send icons to these young people (voters) as ambassadors with a message that they are very powerful in the society and in our democratic set up, she stressed. This year’s election motto is “Nothing like voting, I vote for sure”.
Having the power to influence and having the power to own up to certain responsibility in the society, the DC requested them to be part of the democratic system in the government. We are looking forward to your contribution to use your skills and influence to help advertise the importance of voting, she added.
The appointed icons, who are successful artist and sports personalities, will spread messages in local language for far reaching impact so that every person who lives in far nook and corner can understand and able to know the message.
On selecting the said Icons, Rinshang Shaiza, Nodal Officer, SVEEP apprised that the decision to select them was “not only based on your career or your achievement, but we also did some research, and we feel that your presence will reach immensely to our youngsters or youth and over all to our society.” Rinshang Shaiza hoped that despite lack of resources they can join hands together to bring some changes in the upcoming election.
“Our target as per govt guideline is to take voters to 75% from the constant 65%. He is confident that through the involvement and participation of the Icons, who are well-known not just in the State but across the country, the number of voters can rise. During the informal interaction, the newly appointed icons also shared their views on how they can contribute as per their capability.
The Manipur MP election is likely to be held between April and May 2024 to elect 2 members, inner and outer of 18th Lok Sabha.
