Ukhrul: Muirei emerged victorious in the Third All Tangkhul Village Level Volleyball Men’s Open Tournament at Awungtang, Hungpung, defeating THYSO in an intense match. The tournament in its third edition under the theme ‘No to Drugs’ is hosted by Thawaijao Hungpung Young Student’s Organization (THYSO) in collaboration with Hungpung Sports Committee.
The tournament, which kicked off on October 1st, drew participation from 21 villages and generated immense excitement among fans. The energetic atmosphere was palpable from the start, with a massive turnout of over 3000 spectators flocking to witness the intense final match between THYSO and Muirei. Coincidentally, these two teams had also clashed in the 2024 final, adding an extra layer of competition to the encounter.

Brig Reisang Luikham, MSM, Retired, attended the closing ceremony as the Chief Guest and expressed gratitude for the people’s support. He saw the large turnout as a testament to the community’s understanding of health as a valuable asset. Luikham was pleased with the participation of 21 villages and encouraged other villages to join future tournaments. He emphasized that such events promote good health and urged youth to take initiative and be part of it.
He pointed out that the rampant use of drugs, substances, and alcohol is a major factor contributing to issues with youth today, rendering many unproductive in society despite guidance from parents and church leaders.
Hubert Lunghar, THYSO President, stated that the tournament aimed to promote unity and harmony within the Tangkhul community and steer youth away from illicit activities like substance abuse. The league-format tournament which brought together 21 villages under ‘No to Drugs’ nurtured sense of unity and provided positive outlet for young people.
He encouraged the youth to embrace sportsmanship and prioritize a fit and healthy lifestyle. Additionally, he appealed to the community to participate more actively in such events and promote overall well-being and unity of the Tangkhul.

The tournament in 2023 originated as a response to the prevalence of alcohol and drug abuse among Hungpung’s Awungtang youth. To address this issue, the community built a volleyball ground and launched the Open Tournament under the then THYSO team, led by President Ringphami TS, aiming to channel youth energy into a healthier pursuit.
The initiative’s success was remarkable, as the excitement around volleyball drew local youth to engage in the sport, shifting their focus away from idleness and substance abuse. Locals have noted a positive change in youths’ lifestyles and habits, with parents expressing gratitude for the initiative’s impact on their children’s well-being.

Many Muirei athletes who won this year’s tournament come from families that have struggled with substance abuse, making their victory a witness to their hard work, discipline, and determination to break free from that cycle. Their win is a triumph of perseverance and a healthier lifestyle, showcasing the positive impact of sports on individuals and communities.
The THYSO team, led by President Hubert Lunghar, has successfully hosted the tournament, promoting unity and healthy living within the Tangkhul community. The event has sent a strong message, inspiring young people to prioritize their well-being and contribute to the community’s prosperity.
