Ukhrul, June 8, 2026: Calling for the immediate relocation of the Assam Rifles post from New Haven to the vulnerable TM Kasom ambush site and demanding a judicial inquiry into the alleged assault on women protesters, Ukhrul MLA Ram Muivah has urged Chief Minister Yumnam Khemchand Singh, to intervene in the aftermath of a confrontation that left at least 22 Tangkhul Naga women injured.
In his memorandum to the CM, MLA Ram Muivah sought the Chief Minister’s urgent intervention on two key issues. He urged the government to relocate the Assam Rifles post from New Haven to the ambush-prone TM Kasom area at the earliest, arguing that the latter remains a more vulnerable location requiring enhanced security presence.
Muivah also called for the institution of a judicial inquiry into the alleged firing and baton charge by Assam Rifles personnel on unarmed women protesters and student leader M. Kasar during the June 7 incident.
The incident occurred at Finch Corner, Shokvao and New Haven, where local women were protesting against the establishment of an Assam Rifles post. The protesters reportedly opposed the deployment, alleging that the post was set up without the consent of the village authority and in violation of provisions of the Manipur (Village Authorities in Hill Areas) Act, 1956.
MLA Ram Muivah argued that security deployment should be prioritised at the vulnerable TM Kasom–Litan stretch rather than at New Haven. He noted that the area along the Thoubal River gorge has witnessed a series of deadly attacks in recent months, including the killing of two Tangkhul civilians in an ambush on April 18, 2026, an attack on the Officer-in-Charge of Chingai Police Station, and the recent killing of an FCI truck driver from Howrah, West Bengal.
Describing the narrow gorge between TM Kasom and Litan as a highly vulnerable corridor, Muivah stated that local residents have consistently demanded the deployment of armed forces on either bank of the Thoubal River to secure the area and prevent further attacks. He maintained that such strategic locations should have been accorded priority for security deployment instead of New Haven.
The issue comes against the backdrop of heightened insecurity in the region. Recent months have seen multiple violent incidents, including attacks on civilians and security personnel along National Highway 202. Residents have repeatedly called for stronger security measures at identified vulnerable locations.
