14-Year-Old Electrocuted in Ukhrul, FIR Filed for Negligence

Date:

Ukhrul, Manipur | EKHON: A serious electrocution incident involving a 14-year-old boy has triggered public concern and demands for accountability over the maintenance of high-voltage power infrastructure in Manipur’s Ukhrul district.

The victim, Ngammeikhai R. Shimray, sustained severe burn injuries on the morning of April 22 after reportedly coming into contact with a live 33 KV transmission line near Langdang Village at approximately 10:15 AM. A resident of Rarsomtang in Phungreitang East, the boy suffered critical injuries to his face, head, and feet and is currently undergoing treatment at Ukhrul District Hospital.

According to a formal complaint filed by his elder brother, Ngachonshang R. Shimray, the transmission line, maintained by the Manipur State Power Company Limited (MSPCL), was hanging dangerously low, at an estimated height of just four feet above the ground. The complaint alleged gross negligence and failure of duty, stating that the hazardous condition posed an immediate risk to residents in the area.

Following the complaint, an FIR was registered at Ukhrul Police Station on April 24. Authorities have initiated an investigation into the incident, focusing on potential lapses in maintenance standards and safety compliance by the responsible agency.

The incident has once again raised serious questions about infrastructure oversight, particularly in remote and rural regions where regular inspection and upkeep of electrical installations remain inconsistent.

Local residents and community leaders have called for urgent intervention, stricter monitoring, and accountability to prevent such life-threatening incidents in the future.

The complainant has urged authorities to ensure a fair and swift investigation, emphasizing that those responsible must be held accountable to safeguard public safety and restore trust in essential services.
